The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is dedicated to enriching Chicago’s artistic vitality and cultural vibrancy. This includes fostering the development of Chicago’s non-profit arts sector, independent working artists and for-profit arts businesses; providing a framework to guide the City’s future cultural and economic growth, via the 2012 Chicago Cultural Plan; marketing the City’s cultural assets to a worldwide audience; and presenting high-quality, free and affordable cultural programs for residents and visitors.
DCASE along with the League of Chicago Theatres has designated 2019 The Year of Chicago Theatre emphasizing the prominence of Chicago’s expansive and innovative theatre industry. As part of this special designation DCASE is seeking proposals from Chicago’s diverse theatre and performance community - including street theatre, stage combat, musical performance, improv and immersive theatre - to present original works at Millennium Park, home to 20 million visitors annually.
Millennium Park Theatre Series
Between July--October 2019, DCASE will commission up to 12 theatre companies to complete a one week residency in Millennium Park. Companies will have the opportunity to develop site –specific theatre performances that engage the unique architecture, design, public art and Cloud Gate Plaza as the ultimate stage. Companies will be required to produce a minimum of three performances during the week long residency. All performances will be free and open to the public.
As a tool to engage and expand audiences, the goal of this program is to bring Chicago theatre to life within Millennium Park, Chicago’s town square, and encourage the millions of visitors, both from Chicago and around the world, to embrace and attend Chicago theatre – the fearless soul of Chicago.
