As part of the 2019 Year of Chicago Theatre, this special designation DCASE is seeking proposals from Chicago’s diverse theatre and performance community - including street theatre, stage combat, musical performance, improv and immersive theatre - to present original works at Millennium Park. Companies will have the opportunity to develop site- -specific theatre performances that engage the unique architecture, design, public art and Cloud Gate Plaza as the ultimate stage. Between July--October 2019, DCASE will commission up to 12 theatre companies to complete a one week residency in Millennium Park and produce a minimum of three performances that are free and open to the public.

Program Overview

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is dedicated to enriching Chicago’s artistic vitality and cultural vibrancy. This includes fostering the development of Chicago’s non-profit arts sector, independent working artists and for-profit arts businesses; providing a framework to guide the City’s future cultural and economic growth, via the 2012 Chicago Cultural Plan; marketing the City’s cultural assets to a worldwide audience; and presenting high-quality, free and affordable cultural programs for residents and visitors.

DCASE along with the League of Chicago Theatres has designated 2019 The Year of Chicago Theatre emphasizing the prominence of Chicago’s expansive and innovative theatre industry. As part of this special designation DCASE is seeking proposals from Chicago’s diverse theatre and performance community - including street theatre, stage combat, musical performance, improv and immersive theatre - to present original works at Millennium Park, home to 20 million visitors annually.

 

Millennium Park Theatre Series

Between July--October 2019, DCASE will commission up to 12 theatre companies to complete a one week residency in Millennium Park. Companies will have the opportunity to develop site –specific theatre performances that engage the unique architecture, design, public art and Cloud Gate Plaza as the ultimate stage.  Companies will be required to produce a minimum of three performances during the week long residency. All performances will be free and open to the public.

As a tool to engage and expand audiences, the goal of this program is to bring Chicago theatre to life within Millennium Park, Chicago’s town square, and encourage the millions of visitors, both from Chicago and around the world, to embrace and attend Chicago theatre – the fearless soul of Chicago.

This program is generously supported by the Millennium Park Foundation and Bayless Foundation.

 

Budget

Each company will receive $18,000  towards the performance costs, which includes all artistic fees and production expenses, including but not limited to the design and construction of staging elements, as well as lighting, sound and technical staff. DCASE will provide support for house costs including electrical, front of house, security, and park maintenance.

 

Eligibility

Organizations must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this program:

  • Have a primary mission to create, produce, and present theatre
  • A history of high-quality, cultural program as evidence in your program portfolio
  • Be a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization incorporated in the State of Illinois for at least 12 months prior to applying (must have been incorporated as of January 2018 ).
  • Be a resident company in the city of Chicago with a valid street address (P.O. Boxes will not be accepted)

 

Evaluation Criteria

Successful proposals will demonstrate the following:

  • An ability to reach the diverse intergenerational, local and international audiences that attend Millennium Park including youth and families.
  • Rigor, curiosity, originality, creativity and strategic risk-taking
  • A clear audience engagement perspective and plan that outlines how the proposed program will help the organization meet their audience engagement goals
  • A commitment to equity, inclusion and access by engaging across race, ethnicity, class, ability, gender identity and sexual orientation
  • A team comprised of professional artistic, production and technical staff that have the ability to produce the event
  • A realistic budget and timeline and ability to realize the project within the given parameters
