Taste of Chicago

Our Commitment to Food Safety

Taste of Chicago   >  Our Commitment to Food Safety

The Taste of Chicago is dedicated to providing a healthy and safe event for all. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Illinois Restaurant Association take great care in reviewing, training and inspecting restaurants in advance and on site to ensure that you feel safe attending and eating at the event.

While any Chicago-based restaurant can apply to sell food at Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Illinois Restaurant Association consider restaurant applicants’ inspection history for the previous three years before allowing them to participate in Taste. No applicants with unresolved critical or serious violations at their business are accepted or allowed to serve food at Taste of Chicago.

Participating food vendors go through extensive operational and sanitation training in advance of the festival. They learn from departments integral to festival operations, such as the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Fire Department, as well as the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Illinois Restaurant Association.

Additionally, all menu items are carefully reviewed and approved by the Chicago Department of Public Health with the festival’s outside environment and temperature in mind.

The measures we take at Taste of Chicago are above and beyond the common food safety practices at outdoor festivals. Participating restaurants are held to the highest safety standards in a tightly controlled environment at the Taste of Chicago festival grounds.

On-site at the festival, restaurants are inspected by Chicago Department of Public Health four times each day to ensure that they are following all safety measures. Additionally, the Illinois Restaurant Association hires certified trainers in foodservice sanitation to ensure that all restaurants are using proper techniques in safe food handling. These sanitarians are on-site at all times during the event.

Thanks for attending Taste of Chicago. Enjoy your visit!
