Mayor Richard M. Daley and police officials today added the star of Sgt. Alan Haymaker to the Police Superintendent’s Honored Star Case, reserved for Chicago police officers who died in the performance of their duty.
Haymaker’s is the 477th Honored Star.
Haymaker, a 22-year veteran of the force, died February 22, 2010, in a car accident while responding to a burglary call.
“We know that every Chicagoan should be grateful for his service. But we also know that often it’s not until we lose an Alan Haymaker that we fully appreciate the job that thousands of police officers and firefighters do so the rest of us can live in safety,” Daley said in the ceremony held at police headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Av.
Haymaker was a third generation police officer and law enforcement was such a strong calling for him that he left another strong calling – the ministry – to join the department, the Mayor said.
“Today, in celebrating Alan Haymaker’s life, we keep alive his memory -- and the memory of his fellow officers whose stars are in this case – to inspire present and future members of the police department,” Daley said.
“And by honoring his star, we ensure that Sergeant Alan Haymaker will have a lasting and special place in the history of the Chicago Police Department,” he said.
