Mayor Richard M. Daley today joined Whirlpool Corporation officials at the ribbon-cutting of the new “World of Whirlpool” facility that will serve as a destination for designers, trade customers, leaders of the home appliance industry and the media who cover that industry.

“We've worked hard since I've been Mayor to transform our economy, to keep existing jobs here and to bring the jobs and businesses of the future to Chicago and to solidify Chicago's ability to compete nationally and globally,” Daley said at the new facility, which is located in the historic Reid Murdoch Center, 325 N. LaSalle St.
“Since the recession began, more than 100 businesses have expanded or located downtown and in our neighborhoods, creating much needed jobs. Today, Whirlpool – the world’s leading manufacturer of major home appliances -- joins that group,” the Mayor said.
The “World of Whirlpool” will add 20 new jobs to the local economy. With nearly 30,000 square feet, it will showcase Whirlpool’s several well-known home appliance brands.
Daley said he is especially pleased that Whirlpool has honored Chicago’s mission to be the most environmentally-friendly city in the nation by following green principles in renovating the space.
For example, the facility was built using locally-sourced construction materials and materials made from recycled and renewable content and it features low-flow plumbing fixtures.
“In Chicago we look at businesses to be a part of our continuing environmental efforts, so we’re very pleased to have a new partner in Whirlpool,” the mayor said.
Daley said that despite the economic challenges the City is currently facing, it continues to invest in things that improve quality of life: neighborhood schools, libraries, infrastructure and the environment.
“And we continue to attract companies and people who want to be part of a vital community such as ours,” he said.
