Mayor Richard M. Daley and Chicago Police Department officials today added the star of Officer Thomas Wortham IV to the Police Superintendent’s Honored Star Case.
Wortham was killed May 19 when several people approached him outside his family’s South Side home and attempted to steal his new motorcycle.
His is the 478th Honored Star.
“Thomas Wortham was an exceptional police officer and an exceptional young man,” Daley said at the ceremony held at Chicago Police Headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Av.
“The people of Chicago have lost a compassionate man – a community leader who touched many lives and worked tirelessly to make his neighborhood safer and our city a better place,” he said.
The Mayor said Chicago must honor the memory of Thomas Wortham by drawing on his strength, his sense of commitment, his love of his home town to defeat those who spread violence and pain across the City.
“As a city, we must continue to stand up to the gun and drug thugs who terrorize our communities – the way Thomas Wortham did,” Daley said.
“Let the way he went about his life and his work serve as an inspiration to all of us – and especially to the courageous members of the police department who place themselves in danger every day so that the rest of us can go about our lives in peace,” he said.
