The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities is seeking an intern to assist with various duties in the Disability Resources Unit. The Disability Resources Unit is responsible for providing a myriad of services, both directly and indirectly to people with disabilities who live in and visit Chicago. MOPD promotes total access, full participation, and equal opportunity for people with disabilities of all ages in all aspects of life. The ideal student is highly motivated and is dedicated to improving public service while obtaining “hands-on” work experience in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities of the Disability Resources Intern may include: Receive and provide services in a fast-paced environment to electronic requests, walk-in and phone clients who have a variety of disabilities which may include, but are not limited to: physical, mental health, and/or developmental disabilities. Individuals may also have substance abuse issues. Provide information services, and direct services which include assistance with completing RTA/PACE applications on-line, Advocacy, Practical Assistance and Short-term counseling, resource research, and conducting in-home client visits. Conduct community outreach in various settings including digital environments. Complete data forms; maintain statistical data on service delivery provided. Perform clerical tasks such as filing, inventory control, data entry, mailings. Flexibility required.
Interns will also be asked to work on special projects requiring research, report writing and the development of presentations. In addition, interns will also be asked to develop creative ways to increase following on social media and promote MOPD events.

Hours: 8:30 – 4:30 p.m or 9:00 -5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, Maximum of 35 hours per week
SALARY: Freshman/Sophomore $12.00/H, Junior/Senior $13.00/H, Graduate Student $14.00/H
THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION
THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM CAREER SERVICE. Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/information technology school. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.
- Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment/internship
- Student must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) throughout the duration of internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e summer

- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner.
- Reception skills to be able answer calls and transfer calls using a multi-line phone system, take written messages and direct walk-in clients.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
- Possess the ability to establish a rapport with individuals, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Computer proficiency utilizing the internet for research, meetings, completion of forms and printing information and forms.
- Basic proficiency with computer software and navigating the internet (i.e., Microsoft Suites).
- Good verbal and written communication so that information is relayed in a clear concise manner.
- Must be reliable, organized and have a positive attitude
- Willingness to accept direction/redirection
- Ability to handle a variety of situations
- Ability to analyze and evaluate situations and exercise sound judgment
- Strong research skills, ability to write reports, develop presentations and present findings
- Ability to find creative ways to enhance MOPD’s programs and services through special projects
- Knowledgeable in promoting organizations and events on social media (Facebook & Twitter)
- Ability and willingness to work in groups and independently
- Bilingual highly preferred; English plus Spanish

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
- Bachelor level student majoring in Counseling, Rehabilitation, Social Work, Education, Special Education or a comparable Human/Social Services degree program
- Bi-lingual – Spanish
- Proficiency in promoting organizations and events on social media
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software

Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
