Overview

CDOT is planning to upgrade pedestrian safety infrastructure on South Pulaski Road from 43rd Street to 59th Street. The improvements are planned as part of an arterial resurfacing project to address community safety concerns along the corridor. A series of rapid delivery improvments were installed in 2024, using pavement markings and flex-posts to encourage safer vehicle speeds, passing behaviors, turning movements, and to better organize the street. As part of the resurfacing effort, those newer features will be made permanent with concrete medians, pedestrian refuge islands, curb extensions, and raised crosswalks on side streets.

Project Goals & Infrastructure Highlights

  • Right-sized travel lanes to encourage safer and more appropriate travel speeds
  • Pedestrian refuge islands to facilitate safer crossings at many intersections along the corridor
  • Raised crosswalks to be installed on side streets near school campuses
  • Bus bulbs to improve CTA bus operations along the corridor

Project Location

Pulaski Road from the 43rd Street to 59th Street.
