Terms and Conditions for Masonry Work
General
Work on an existing building or structure
Work authorized by this permit must comply with the General Terms and Conditions for Work on Existing Buildings and Structures.
Mason work
Building elements constructed of stone, concrete, terra cotta (including clay brick), structural tile, or any combination of these materials may only be installed or repaired by a Chicago-licensed mason contractor.
Brick and Unit Masonry Repair
Unit masonry work
Unit masonry work must comply with Chapter 21 of the Chicago Building Code.
Scope of repair
This permit does not authorize reconstruction of all wythes of a multi-wythe masonry exterior wall (other than a parapet wall). Reconstruction of a masonry exterior wall (other than a parapet wall) requires a plan-based building permit application.
Reconstruction of elements other than exterior walls
This permit only authorizes reconstruction or in-kind replacement of masonry elements other than exterior walls, such as chimneys, that are specifically described in the permit application.
Lintel replacement
Lintels over 6 feet (72 inches) in length cannot be replaced using this permit unless specifications prepared by an Illinois-licensed architect or structural engineer were submitted with the permit application.
Concrete Repair
Concrete work
Concrete work must comply with Chapter 19 of the Chicago Building Code.
Scope of repair
This permit does not authorize reconfiguration of existing concrete building elements. Reconfiguration of existing elements, such as lowering the elevation of a basement floor slab, requires a plan-based building permit application.
Parapet Rebuilding
Unit masonry work
Unit masonry work must comply with Chapter 21 of the Chicago Building Code.
Unbraced height
This permit does not authorize rebuilding a parapet with an unbraced height exceeding 5 feet.
In-kind replacement
This permit only authorizes in-kind replacement of parapet walls described in the permit application.
