Private General Isolation Rooms

A low acuity COVID-19 isolation facility in a hotel setting has been established in Chicagoland. Private General Isolation Rooms are intended for Chicago residents experiencing a relatively mild case of COVID-19, lack an appropriate setting to isolate and recover from their COVID illness, and are not in need of additional medical and/or behavioral health support.

Those admitted to a Private Room Isolation Facility will receive a private single occupancy room / bathroom along with TV/Wi-Fi and 3 meals a day delivered to their door at no cost. Free parking is also available.

There are a limited number of adjoining rooms and rooms with two beds that can be made available to Chicagoans who need to isolate with children.

In addition to 24/7 support staff, and security, the private room isolation facility is staffed by nurses 24 hours a day for periodic wellness checks.


Hospital or Outpatient Clinic medical professionals or their designees (discharge planners) seeking to discharge or transfer patients in need of a place to complete their isolation, should attach their patient’s History and Physical Note (Hospital) or Visit Note (Outpatient Clinic) to the online central intake form.  Please complete the entire form; leaving any field blank will delay the referral review process.

Carefully investigate and communicate, within the form, any chronic or high-risk medical or psychiatric conditions, security concerns, criminal history, or need for other wrap-around support services. This information is essential to ensure the patient is routed to the appropriate isolation facility.

  • Patient must have laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, and
  • lack the ability to safely isolate at home away from other family members, and
  • not need additional medical and/or behavioral health support.
  • Signs or symptoms of severe COVID-19 disease: e.g. temperature >103°F; Oxygen saturation <92% on room air; respiratory rate of >30 breaths per minute; difficulty breathing/respiratory distress.
  • Chronic medical conditions such as:
    • Use of supplemental oxygen to maintain O2 saturation above 92%
    • Blood glucose readings >300 mg/dL (Diabetics may be admitted if they are able to manage their glucose levels with personal supplies and without need of any assistance)
    • Uncontrolled and symptomatic hypertension
    • Pregnancy beyond 20.0 weeks gestational age
    • Receiving hemodialysis or chemotherapy
    • Diagnosis of acute tuberculosis
    • Acute diarrheal illness, active XDRO, Candida auris colonization or infection
  • Chronic mental health conditions such as:
    • Alcohol withdrawal risk (history of alcohol use disorder or alcohol dependence and recent last drink)
    • Opioid withdrawal
    • Severe uncontrolled psychosis
    • Disorientation
    • Active suicidal/homicidal ideation
    • Personality disorders that challenge the person’s ability to abide by facility rules (Note: individuals with mental health disorders that are being managed with psychotropic medications may still be eligible if they have not experienced a flare up that required hospitalization within the last 2 years)
  • Tobacco use with unwillingness to use nicotine replacement therapy while at isolation facility
  • Current infestations such as scabies, bedbugs, or scabies; (clients who completed treatment are not excluded)
  • Unwillingness or inability to stay at the isolation facility through completion of the isolation period
  • Patient must remain in isolation until discharged.
    • Patients are expected to stay in their room for the entirety of their stay; they will not be issued a key to their room.
  • Patients must be fully ambulatory; no assistance is available to get patients to their room.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided, at no cost, at designated times. (Note: Vegetarian and Meat options are available; food allergies can be accommodated; but specialized diet regimens such as low-sodium or DASH diets are not available)
  • Upon arrival a security guard will screen patient and any personal possessions for any contraband or weapons.
  • All staff interacting with patient will be wearing personal protective equipment
  • Patients will be required to wear provided surgical masks each time they open their door to retrieve items.
  • Patient will be required to check their own temperature 1-2x/ daily, at the direction of CDPH staff, or designee. (Each patient will be loaned a digital thermometer).
  • Nurses perform periodic wellness checks throughout the day, almost always by phone.
  • Patients can reach nursing staff by phone 24 hours/day.
  • Room service or daily housekeeping is not included; patient is responsible for the upkeep of their room. (Note: laundry service for personal clothing is not available)
  • All items, including food waste, should be disposed of within the room. Trash will be picked up on a daily basis, towels and linens can be provided as needed.
  • Basic toiletries will be provided.
  • Visitors are not allowed.
  • Alcohol consumption and smoking are prohibited on the premises.
  • Patients may use their personal cell phone; phone chargers will not be provided.
  • Patients must bring basic items needed for the duration of their stay (e.g. clothes, reading materials, phone, etc.).
  • External deliveries including take-out food are prohibited. Exceptions may be made for emergency items.
  • 10 days or more from symptom onset; AND 3 days (72 hours) or more afebrile without antipyretics and improved symptoms, whichever is longer.
  • Cleared for discharge by healthcare provider on site.

 


Notes on Returning to Shelter After Completing the Minimum Isolation Period

After the minimum isolation period has been completed, clients experiencing homelessness may return to a general congregate facility.

CDPH recommends following CDC recommendations for preventing community transmission COVID-19 disease: 

Individual facilities may choose to maintain transitional precautions beyond the minimum isolation period based on the ability to maintain adequate social distancing and hygiene as recommended for all clients during current widespread COVID-19 community transmission.  Additional measures could include the following:

  • Continue to implement social distancing measures and encourage recovering clients to wear a cloth face covering in common areas where social distancing is challenging until all symptoms are completely resolved or until 14 days after illness onset, whichever is longer.
  • Continue to keep beds at least 6 feet apart, use temporary barriers between beds (such as curtains), and request that all clients sleep head-to-toe.

Consultation is available for individual cases, but in general, clients should not be prevented from returning to the referring facility if they have completed the minimum isolation period described above which is intended to minimize risk of transmission for a range of disease severity associated with COVID-19.
