CHICAGO - The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that beginning Monday, April 20, drivers can expect lane closures in both directions of Michigan Avenue from Monroe Street to Ida B. Wells Drive.

The closure of two lanes in each direction is required for Peoples Gas to complete gas main upgrades and for concrete repairs and milling in preparation for a CDOT roadway resurfacing project for this section of Michigan Avenue that is expected to be completed by the end of May. An additional stretch, the southbound lanes of Michigan from Ida B. Wells to Balbo, will also be resurfaced by Peoples Gas during this timeframe.

Throughout the project, there will be one northbound and one southbound lane open to vehicle traffic at all times during work hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Due to the current lower traffic volume, no detour will be in place. But motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays, including State Street or Columbus Drive.

With the arrival of spring and the start of construction season, more road work will be getting underway across the City in the coming weeks.

CDOT crews and contractors are closely following the public health guidance and protocols of the Chicago Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control during the COVID-19 pandemic. These protocols include a toolbox safety talks to review safety practices, regular cleaning of high contact surfaces and equipment, frequent hand-washing, maintaining a safe social distance on the work site, avoiding handshaking and staying home if sick.

The goal is to prioritize the safety of the work force, while also working most efficiently during this period of lighter traffic volume on the roadways. Motorists are urged to slow down, be on the lookout for workers and proceed with caution when driving through the work zone.

CDOT is coordinating the Michigan Avenue project with Peoples Gas, and authorizing longer daily work hours, in order to expedite this road work that was scheduled to take place later this year.
