Position Announcement: Appeals Officer

July 27, 2020

The Chicago Police Board seeks highly-qualified attorneys to serve as Appeals Officers to consider appeals by applicants for a probationary police officer position who have been removed from the Chicago Police Department’s eligibility list due to the results of a background investigation.  The primary responsibility of the Appeals Officer is making findings of fact, conclusions of law, and recommendations to the Board in appeals of applicants removed from the eligibility list.

The Municipal Code of Chicago (2-84-035) requires the Appeals Officer to be an attorney licensed to practice in the State of Illinois in good standing.  The Board is seeking attorneys with an in-depth knowledge of the law and procedure, excellent oral- and written-communication skills, and an ability to present legal and factual issues clearly and impartially to the Board members.

This is a contract position with the Chicago Police Board; therefore, all typical rights and benefits of employee status are not available. Appeals Officers will act as independent contractors and will be responsible for providing all equipment and materials necessary to perform the tasks of the job.  Appeals Officers serve on an hourly basis.  Compensation is $100 per hour.

Applicants shall send via electronic mail to Police Board Executive Director Max Caproni (Max.Caproni@cityofchicago.org) the following material: (1) a completed application form; (2) a résumé; and (3) one writing sample.

All material must be sent via electronic mail and received by Monday, August 17, 2020

If you have a disability and require a reasonable accommodation to submit your application, please contact Executive Director Caproni by e-mail or at 312-742-3259.
