Group Classes and Activities Suspended at Senior Centers Until Further Notice

Embracing the common-sense direction from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) regarding older adults and coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services (DFSS) will temporarily suspend group classes and activities at the City’s six regional senior centers and 15 senior satellite centers, effective Wednesday, March 11, until further notice.

As of now, senior centers will remain open and operate regular hours. The following services will continue to be available:
• Dining: DFSS will continue to provide meals to seniors using boxed meals in place of the standard dining-in program. Seniors are required to take the boxed meals to-go. Seniors will not have an option to sit in the centers and eat together.
• Benefits Assistance: Seniors can still visit the centers to get help with applying for public benefits.
• Food Pantries will continue to operate during standard days and times.

According to the CDC, older adults appear to be twice as likely to contract serious COVID-19 illness, and therefore are encouraged to stay home as much as possible, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact with others and wash your hands often.
