New City/Back of the Yards Corridor Streetscape Improvements

Overview

CDOT streetscape improvement projects consist of infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and placemaking improvements with the goal of creating unified, safe, walkable, and attractive commercial destinations. Streetscape projects foster community and economic growth by prioritizing investments in pedestrian activity, multi-modal transportation, vibrant public spaces, and quality-of-life amenities for local residents.

47th & Ashland are vibrant commercial corridors in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. A variety of local neighborhood shops, restaurants, and businesses are found along the corridors, alongside artistic murals exemplifying the unique character of the community. The streetscape project aims to support this commercial activity and community vibrancy through its improvements. The corridor improvements’ theme of “Back of the Yards Historic Commercial District Meets Modern Neighborhood Vibrancy” was based on the community’s desire to capture the past and future of the area. Design motifs used for placemaking elements represent Back of the Yards’ historic structures which supported generations of people who found their American Dream in this community.
