Make Way for People

MAKE WAY FOR PEOPLE

The Make Way for People Program is a placemaking initiative that supports public-private partnerships to transform the public way through creative temporary tactical improvements such as People Spots, People Streets, People Places and People Plazas.

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) guides applicants through an iterative Make Way for People (MWFP) application process to implement community-led temporary placemaking efforts that transform the public way into active community spaces. Lower cost temporary tactical improvements can be quickly implemented, serve as pilot projects to support future permanent investments and have a positive community impact. By converting neighborhood streets, sidewalks, plazas and alleys into people-centered places, the program helps create safe, walkable neighborhoods that support local business and strengthen a sense of place.

Applications

CDOT staff is available to assist residents, businesses, and community organizations in developing Make Way for People initiatives in their communities. The first step in the application process is to schedule an intake meeting with CDOT to discuss concepts, project location, feasibility and next steps. Intake meetings are held every Wednesday between 2PM-4PM and can be scheduled by emailing MWFP@cityofchicago.org. Details on the application process and requirements can be found in the Resources section below.

After initial CDOT approval, applicants can submit a MWFP application through the City of Chicago’s Inspections, Permitting, and Licensing Portal at City of Chicago | Inspection, Permitting & Licensing Portal. Please advise the CDOT team at MWFP@cityofchicago.org of the DOT application number upon submitting.
