Residential Recycling

Residential Recycling

As part of an agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), the City of Chicago is partnering with Recycle Coach to provide information on recycling and other forms of waste diversion in Chicago. DSS households served by the Blue Cart program can look up hundreds of materials using thousands of terms to determine their proper cart placement for curbside collection, and all residential households can explore City-managed drop-off programs, as well as retail and reuse drop-off outlets.

Schedules and Service Day Reminders

Blue cart recycleBlue Cart Households are able to look up and set reminders for their collection schedule. If you are not in a one-to-four unit building serviced by the City of Chicago, please check with your building owner or property manager office for information on your collection schedule.

For residents in Blue Cart Households: recycling crews are not permitted to enter private property, so please ensure that you have your cart out in the alley/on the curb the night before your collection day. Carts must be fully accessible and not blocked in by parked vehicles or behind gated enclosures. The recycling trucks can arrive as early as 7 am, so this will prevent missed pickups. Signing up for service day reminders on Recycle Coach will also alert you to changes to garbage and recycling collection days due to a holiday that week.

Use the City’s Residential Recycling Drop-off Centers to recycle the same full range of materials accepted in the Blue Cart Recycling Program, including paper, plastics, glass and cardboard.  Toss all your recyclables in together; no sorting or special bags are required. You may use a bag to transport your materials to the drop-off center; however, it will be pulled at the recycling facility as plastic bags are not accepted in the program.

Blue Cart & Recycling Drop-Off Center:  Accepted Materials

Through its Recycling Block Captain program, the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) invites interested residents to learn about and serve as a community ambassadors for the City's Blue Cart and other types of recycling. As a Recycling Block Captain, residents may ask questions and provide feedback to DSS staff about how the programs are working, and they receive regular communication providing information and seasonal updates on events that they in turn can provide to their neighbors. The DSS team will ensure the Recycling Block Captains have the knowledge they need to be a trusted ambassador and effective advocate for their communities.

Become a Recycling Block Captain today by completing this Block Captain Form, or call 312.744.2413 and one of the DSS Recycling and Materials Management team will be happy to answer any questions (please leave your name and contact info if leaving a message after-hours or on the weekend).
