Catalpa Plaza Improvements - Ashland Avenue to Clark Street (aka Elise Malary Plaza)

Overview

CDOT streetscape improvement projects consist of infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and placemaking improvements with the goal of creating unified, safe, walkable, and attractive commercial destinations. Streetscape projects foster community and economic growth by prioritizing investments in pedestrian activity, multi-modal transportation, vibrant public spaces, and quality-of-life amenities for local residents.

Catalpa Avenue between Ashland Avenue and Clark Street is currently a one-way street in the Andersonville neighborhood. This street section is often closed to vehicle traffic and used to hold community events, including the the seasonal Andersonville Farmers Market.

The Catalpa Plaza Improvements project will close Catalpa Street to traffic and construct a permanent plaza between Clark Street and Ashland Avenue. The vision for the plaza is to create a sense of place, support local economic development, and provide opportunities for community gatherings and events.

The Andersonville community expressed the need for creating a permanent multi-use space with landscaping, lighting, screening from adjacent parking lots, custom furniture, and other unique elements to create a destination in the neighborhood and attract pedestrians to the area.
