South Chicago Corridor Streetscape Improvements
CDOT streetscape improvement projects consist of infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and placemaking improvements with the goal of creating unified, safe, walkable, and attractive commercial destinations. Streetscape projects foster community and economic growth by prioritizing investments in pedestrian activity, multi-modal transportation, vibrant public spaces, and quality-of-life amenities for local residents.
Commercial Ave and 92nd St are commercial corridors serving the South Chicago neighborhood. These corridors contain a mix of uses including residential, retail, and commercial. Local community members stressed the importance of the steel mills as being a rich component of the neighborhood's history. This feedback was used as inspiration for the design of the light pole identifiers and commemorative bronze plaques.
The Commerical Ave streetscape project builds upon the Great City Institute’s plan to create a thriving pedestrian corridor where residents can showcase their community to the wider region.
