An updated Green Stormwater Infrastructure Strategy will be vital in enhancing the city's resilience to climate change while promoting environmental equity. By identifying and developing a coordinated plan to use natural systems like permeable pavement, green roofs, and bioswales to manage stormwater, the city can reduce the burden on traditional sewer systems and mitigate urban flooding, disproportionately impacting vulnerable communities. These solutions improve water quality in local waterways and create green spaces that enhance air quality and provide residents with cooler, more livable neighborhoods.
The 2025 strategy represents an opportunity to deliver a forward-thinking approach that aligns with Chicago's broader climate and equity goals. This strategy is important groundwork to identify, coordinate, and strategically place future GSI investments in order to build a better, stronger, safer and more climate resilient Chicago.
