Cold Weather Pet Care
In Chicago, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness. Help your pets remain happy and healthy during the colder months by following simple guidelines.
Foster Care/Doggie Day Out Program
CACC’s foster program is designed to allow CACC’s most at-risk animals to be directly placed into short-term foster care allowing for quiet recovery, medical isolation while animals await transfer to a rescue, a calm environment for fearful or under-socialized animals, and / or urgent care for neonate kittens, puppies under eight (8) weeks, and senior animals. CACC’s goal for its foster program is also to provide a direct resource to its Homeward Bound Rescue Partners for more foster homes. If you are interested in becoming a foster caregiver to one of CACC’s animals, please fill out the application here and email it to CACCFoster@cityofchicago.org. Once CACC receives your application, a staff member will email you with the next steps. Thank you for helping CACC’s animals!
Homeward Bound Animal Placement Program
Transferring animals to other State Licensed animal shelters or breed rescue groups often provides them a much better chance of being adopted than remaining at our shelter. Through the Homeward Bound Program, nearly 7,000 animals are transferred out to partnering shelters each year!
Owner Surrender Information
Surrendering Your Pet Surrendering a pet is a difficult decision for any pet owner. If you are considering surrendering your pet to Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC), please consider re-homing your pet first if you are able to do so. CACC is an open-admission municipal animal control and sheltering facility. Because CACC houses strays, animals confiscated for abuse/neglect, dogs deemed dangerous under the law, as well as owner-surrendered pets, the shelter can fill up quickly, especially in the summer months. In partnership with animal rescue organizations and through CACC's adoption program, CACC attempts to find homes for animals that are not irremediably suffering or exhibiting behavior that could pose a danger to the public.
Pet Responsibility Portal
Pet ownership is a very rewarding privilege that requires a high level of responsibility and investment on the animal owner's behalf.
