City Council Office of Financial Analysis

In 2015, the City Council Office of Financial Analysis (COFA) was created to serve as the City Council’s independent budgetary arm. COFA provides the City Council with fiscal analysis of legislation, forecasts, and budget recommendations.

Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability

In July 2021, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance creating a new model for police oversight, accountability, and public safety.

Office of Public Safety Administration

The Office of Public Safety Administration’s (PSA) will assist in ensuring that all residents can fulfill their potential and thrive in safe communities. We understand the critical roles police, fire and 9-1-1 fulfill toward keeping Chicago safe and it is our ongoing objective to provide effective, administrative support in this regard. The PSA’s core mission and responsibility is to provide shared services for Chicago’s public safety departments.  This includes reducing costs, finding efficiencies, improving administrative functions, leveraging technology solutions, employing staff who possess deep, professional experience in public safety, and, always searching for and developing new and innovative ways we can reduce costs and find efficiencies through shared services. 

Office of the Mayor

The Mayor of Chicago, the city's chief executive officer, directs city departments and appoints department heads, with the advice and consent of the city council.

311 City Services

Administrative Hearings

The Department of Administrative Hearings is an independent quasi-judicial body. The matters which come before us to be adjudicated relate to the public health, safety, welfare, morals and economic well being of the residents of the City of Chicago.

Animal Care and Control

Chicago Animal Care and Control protects public safety and ensures the humane care of animals through sheltering, pet placement, education and animal law enforcement.

Buildings

The Department of Buildings enhances safety and quality of life for Chicago's residents and visitors through permitting, inspections, trade licensing, and code enforcement.

Business Affairs and Consumer Protection

The Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) ensures a fair and vibrant marketplace for businesses, workers and consumers in the City of Chicago. BACP licenses businesses and public vehicles, regulates business activity, protects consumers from fraud, enforces Chicago’s labor laws, partners with business service organizations and provides education and resources for businesses.

Chicago Department of Aviation

The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) administers all aspects of two major airports – Chicago O’Hare and Midway International Airports.

Chicago Police Board

City of Chicago TV

City of Chicago TV is responsible for the production of programs which are shown on cable channels 23 and 49 in Chicago as well as being available on the City of Chicago TV social media sites.

The Department of Human Resources facilitates the effective delivery of city services through the establishment of professional human resources management program.

Law

The Department of Law is responsible for providing legal counsel and representation for the City of Chicago, and the departments, officers, and employees of the City.

Office of Budget and Management

Responsible for preparing and executing the City's annual budget. The Office of Budget and Management evaluates the efficiency and efficacy of all City operations and drives management reforms that improve the City's fiscal condition and increase taxpayer value.

Office of Inspector General

You know your city. Talk to us about making Chicago government better. The City of Chicago Office of Inspector General works to make City government better and to hold City actors accountable when they break the rules. If you have information about misconduct, waste, abuse, or mismanagement relating to City officials, City employees, or contractors and subcontractors providing goods or services to the City, or suggestions to improve City government, report it to the Office of Inspector General.

Planning and Development

As the principal planning agency for the City of Chicago, the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) promotes the comprehensive growth and sustainability of the City and its neighborhoods. The department also oversees the City’s zoning and land use policies and employs a variety of resources to encourage business and real estate development, historic preservation, accessible waterfronts, walkable neighborhoods, and related community improvements.

Procurement Services

The Department of Procurement Services (DPS) is the contracting, certification, and compliance authority for the City of Chicago. DPS maintains the highest commitment to diversity, transparency, and innovation while continuously expanding the resources and programs that empower citizens to become involved in the contracting opportunities available at the City.

Streets and Sanitation

The Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) is one of the the largest non-emergency departments with a team of over 2,000 employees and a $283 million annual budget. DSS responds to an average of one million service requests per year making a difference in communities across the city.

Water Management

The Department of Water Management purifies and delivers approximately 750 million gallons of drinking water to residents of Chicago and 120 suburbs daily. 42% of the whole state gets their water from us. We also remove waste water and storm runoff through the sewer system where it is then conveyed to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago for processing. Our mission is to efficiently provide the highest quality drinking water to the Chicago region while protecting our most precious natural resource- Lake Michigan.
