South Chicago TIF

The 327-acre South Chicago TIF district is characterized by older residential properties and vacant lots located north of the Calumet River and west of the former USX/South Works steel mill site on Lake Michigan. Though the area was highly populated when the mill operated for most of the last century, many local properties have fallen into various states of disrepair. The purpose of the TIF is to facilitate the neighborhood's revitalization as a distinct urban neighborhood consisting of mixed-income housing options, convenient retail amenities, nearby public transit options and a planned network of open spaces. TIF increment is intended to help site assembly and land preparation efforts for new construction projects, to promote the rehabilitation of existing structures, and to establish a cohesive and visual identity for the South Chicago community. Job training and day care services are also supported by the TIF.
