PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, since its establishment, the City of Chicago has always been home to vibrant communities of diverse people hailing from all over the world boasting distinct cultural heritages; and WHEREAS, Chicago’s Asian American and Pacific Islander population has become one of the fastest-growing ethnic populations since I985 with more than 600,000 Asian community members calling Chicago home; and WHEREAS, Chicago’s Asian American and Pacific Islander community has bolstered the city in the realms of art and music, business and finance, law and government, education and social service, and science and medicine; and WHEREAS, many Asian American and Pacific Islanders who belong to the Disability
community hold prominent advocacy leadership roles and have made significant contributions to the community, the city, and beyond; and WHEREAS, May has been designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
and Asian American and Pacific Islander Disability Heritage Month; and WHEREAS, the Illinois Self Advocacy Alliance will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Disability Heritage Month by continuing their mission to educating people about the important intersection between Disability and race: NOW, THEREFORE, I, LORI E. LIGHTFOOT, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby proclaim May 2021 to be ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER DISABILITY
HERITAGE MONTH IN CHICAGO and encourage all residents to join in celebrating the many contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders who belong to the Disability community. Dated this 19th day of May 2021.
