Since 2006, the Chicago Department of Transportation has installed thousands of sidewalk ramps throughout the city that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Housing information services offered by the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) are designed to promote and identify integrated, adaptable/accessible and affordable housing for people with disabilities in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Age-Friendly Chicago
In July 2012, Mayor Rahm Emanuel secured a place for Chicago in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities. As a part of the WHO network, Chicago joins a growing number of cities and communities worldwide who are striving to better meet the needs of residents of all ages by creating inclusive and accessible urban environments.

Foster Care/Doggie Day Out Program
CACC’s foster program is designed to allow CACC’s most at-risk animals to be directly placed into short-term foster care allowing for quiet recovery, medical isolation while animals await transfer to a rescue, a calm environment for fearful or under-socialized animals, and / or urgent care for neonate kittens, puppies under eight (8) weeks, and senior animals. CACC’s goal for its foster program is also to provide a direct resource to its Homeward Bound Rescue Partners for more foster homes. If you are interested in becoming a foster caregiver to one of CACC’s animals, please fill out the application here and email it to CACCFoster@cityofchicago.org. Once CACC receives your application, a staff member will email you with the next steps. Thank you for helping CACC’s animals!
Homeward Bound Animal Placement Program
Transferring animals to other State Licensed animal shelters or breed rescue groups often provides them a much better chance of being adopted than remaining at our shelter. Through the Homeward Bound Program, nearly 7,000 animals are transferred out to partnering shelters each year!

In-Home Assistive Devices
MOPD provides personal devices or equipment that will assist an individual to become more independent in their home. Provisions of equipment and instruction is based on the individual needs in the home environment.

Microchip Chicago
Chicago Animal Care and Control strongly recommends that all pet owners microchip and obtain a collar and tag for your pets. Cats that get lost are 9 times more likely to be reunited to their home if they arrive at a shelter with a collar and tag or microchip. Dogs are 5 times more likely to be returned home to their owner if they have a collar and tag or microchip. It is also the law for all dogs to have a city dog license. If your pet gets lost and is found by our shelter we will research the tag and microchip information and contact you as soon as possible to let you know your pet is with us.

Personal Assistance Program
The Personal Assistance Program allows qualified individuals with disabilities who live in the city of Chicago and are under the age of 60 to receive in-home services.
Practical Assistance - Disability Resources
Practical Assistance is assistance provided to help an individual obtain a service or benefit. Assistance may include completing forms such as the circuit breaker, filing applications such as the RTA Reduced Fare application** and writing and/or explaining a letter or formal document.
Service Animals
Service animals are animals that are individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities such as guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling wheelchairs, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, or performing other tasks.
