Divvy Seen as an Attractive Amenity by Real Estate Developer

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced the popular bike share system’s first ever private donation of funds to purchase a Divvy station. AMLI, a real estate developer, has agreed to provide funding for the full cost of a 15-dock Divvy station at Clark Street and 9th Street along with 10 bikes to be added to the Divvy system.   CDOT anticipates that this will be the first of many similar agreements for station purchases.

“Divvy’s recent expansion shows that bicycling is continuing to grow in popularity as a transportation option across the City of Chicago” CDOT Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld said. “This partnership agreement with the private sector provides further opportunities for Divvy expansion and demonstrates that proximity to a Divvy station can a be real selling point in today’s competitive real estate environment.”

The Divvy station, installed this week, is located in the public right-of-way adjacent to the AMLI Lofts and AMLI 900 properties at Clark & 9th Streets in the South Loop. Through AMLI’s donation, this station will become part of the Divvy system and will be operated like all other stations. AMLI is providing funding for the station but is agreeing that the station and bikes will remain the City’s property.

"AMLI Residential is thrilled to sponsor a Divvy bike station next to our South Loop communities, AMLI Lofts and AMLI 900,” AMLI Senior Vice President Jennifer Wolf said. “We have over 1,000 residents who will directly benefit from this connectivity with the Divvy system as they utilize it to travel to work, meet friends and enjoy the benefits of living in the City of Chicago. It is a wonderful complement to promoting a healthy lifestyle within our active communities."

Earlier this year, Divvy launched a major expansion to add 176 stations and more than 1,760 bikes, bringing the system to a total of 476 stations and 4,760 bikes, roughly doubling Divvy’s service area and making it the largest bike share system in North America in terms of number of stations and geographic area. Divvy’s service area now extends as far north as Touhy Avenue, as far south as 75th Street and as far west as Pulaski Road.

In just two years of operation, Divvy has grown quickly in popularity and size. More than 10 million miles have been logged on Divvy bikes through more than 5 million trips. Divvy experienced record-breaking ridership on the Fourth of July holiday, with almost 25,000 trips taken in a single day.
