Project Overview

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is reconstructing the Chicago Avenue Bridge over the Chicago River and the adjacent Halsted Street Viaduct to upgrade aging infrastructure, improve safety, accessibility, and multimodal connectivity.

Scope of Work

  • Remove the existing temporary Chicago Ave. bridge over the River, and replace with a tied-arch bridge
  • Riverwalk connection will be constructed beneath the new bridge
  • Remove the existing Chicago-Halsted viaduct and replace it with a new viaduct
  • New traffic signal at Chicago Ave. at Jefferson St.
  • Street lighting removal and replacement
  • Traffic signal modernization (at 3 intersections)
  • Protected Bike lanes on Halsted St.
  • CTA dedicated bus lanes on Chicago Ave.
  • Landscaping

  • Chicago Avenue from Larrabee Street to Peoria Street
  • Halsted Street from Ancona Street to the Chicago River

Traffic Impacts

Starting August 4, 2025:

  • Halsted Street will be fully closed in both directions.
    • Northbound Detour: Eastbound on Grand Ave, Northbound on Orleans St, Westbound on Division St, back to Halsted St
    • Southbound Detour: Eastbound on Division St, Southbound on LaSalle Dr,  Westbound on Grand Ave, back to Halsted St
  • Chicago Avenue will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction. This traffic pattern will remain in place through October 2025, after which a full closure of Chicago Avenue will be implemented. Further details will be provided closer to that phase of construction.

  • Construction Start: August 2025
  • Estimated Completion: December 2026
