Erie Street Row at 161 E. Erie St. on the Near North Side would be designated as an official Chicago landmark under a proposal introduced to City Council today by Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Designed as a series of five, limestone-clad residences by an unknown architect and completed in 1877, the Italianate-style property was converted to a single commercial use in 1920. In 1960, the two westernmost row-houses were replaced by a mid-rise building.

The building’s history reflects the evolution of the Near North Side in the early 20th century from a predominantly residential neighborhood to a mixed-use community.

The landmark designation would protect all exterior elevations of the building.
