Description:

The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel Supervisor/Senior in its Revenue Litigation Division. The Revenue Litigation Division handles tax assessments that are litigated in the Department of Administrative Hearings, state or federal court; litigates declaratory judgment actions concerning issues such as the enforcement or validity of various taxes, fees and other revenue measures; drafts legislation concerning taxes, fees and other revenue measures; drafts regulations, rulings and opinion letters; and advises other City departments, including the Finance Department and Budget Office, on City ordinances, along with state and federal statutes and constitutional issues. The Division also litigates property tax disputes, including property tax rate objections and property tax valuation cases before the Board of Review, the Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB) and the circuit court. In addition, the Division handles a variety of complex commercial litigation matters having revenue implications for the City.

Qualifications:


(1) graduation from an ABA accredited law school with a grade point average of 3.0 (B-equivalent) or above; (2) graduation from an ABA accredited law school no later than June 2001; (3) experience taking and defending depositions; (4) experience performing direct and cross examination of witnesses at a trial or hearing; (5) experience arguing motions in court or before an administrative tribunal; and (6) licensed in Illinois (or another state bar having reciprocity with Illinois).

Superior writing and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to supervise and work well with others; demonstrated history of taking the initiative; demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines; demonstrated efficiency and sound judgment.
