The Chicago Plan Commission reviews and holds public hearings on certain development projects within proximity of the City's Lake Michigan shoreline in accordance with the Lake Michigan and Chicago Lakefront Protection Ordinance.
The ordinance recognizes that the City's Lake Michigan shoreline possesses special environmental, recreational, cultural, historical, community and aesthetic interests and values that require protection and preservation. The area includes all harbors, piers, breakwaters, locks of the Chicago River, and public open spaces along the water.
Note that effective Jan. 1, 2020, the filing fee for Lakefront Protection Ordinance applications is $1,500.
