The City of Chicago mourns the loss of Gene Saffold, a man whose success in the private sector was matched by his lifetime commitment to philanthropy and civic engagement. Gene always understood that no matter our success as private citizens, everything we do is ultimately measured by what we do to advance the public good.
Through his service as Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Chief Financial Officer, his decade-long tenure on the board of education and his work with the Chicago Youth Centers, Gene showed a steadfast commitment to the city he loved. Gene’s example of civic duty and service endures. Those who were lucky enough to call Gene a friend will never forget his character and integrity, his gentle bearing and quick wit. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gene’s family, friends and loved ones.
