The recreational facilities at three Northwest Side parks will be enhanced through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) proposals approved by the Chicago City Council today.

"The TIF assistance will help the Chicago Park District to finance a variety of improvements that will benefit nearby residents and reinforce these parks as community anchors for years to come," said Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Jefferson Memorial Park, on the 4800 block of North Long Avenue, will be allocated $600,000 from the Jefferson Park TIF district for the reconstruction of an existing playground. Construction is anticipated to start this fall.

Portage Park, on the 4100 block of North Long Avenue, will be allocated $1 million from the West Irving Park TIF District for playground and field house improvements. Construction is anticipated to start this summer.

Riis Park, on the 6100 block of West Fullerton Avenue, will be allocated $1 million from the Diversey and Narragansett TIF district for construction of a new ball field and running track. The improvements were completed last year.

TIF is a City of Chicago funding tool that's used to promote infrastructure and other improvements in designated districts across the city.
