Lincoln Square’s Welles Park field house will receive an additional $400,000 in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) assistance for a new roof under a plan approved today by City Council.

The funds will be used by the Chicago Park District to complete an $850,000 roof replacement project on the main building and swimming pool annex at 2333 W. Sunnyside Ave. The scope of work will include the addition of a new roofing system with new drains and improved insulation.

In 2014, City Council approved $1.3 million in TIF funds for upgrades to the 15-acre park, including $850,000 for tennis court resurfacing, pool and locker room renovations, a new playground, and field house roof repairs, which were initially estimated at $450,000.

The park dates back to 1910 and is named for Gideon Welles, who served as Secretary of the Navy in President Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet.
