Mayor Rahm Emanuel will participate as a panelist in the Chicago Ideas Week presentation ‘Democracy: State of Our Union’ on Monday.  The panel will discuss the role of democracy at the local level.

“Bringing together some of the world’s top innovators, thinkers, creators and doers to America’s most dynamic city, Chicago Ideas Week sparks innovations, new initiatives, and new relationships that help make our community more connected,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Chicago Ideas Week captures the spirit of ingenuity and inventiveness of our city, and I am excited to take part.”

Mayor Emanuel will share the stage with the Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, Mayor Annise Parker of Houston and Mayor Acquanetta Warren of Fontana, Calif., as well as top political journalists John Heileman of New York Magazine and Michael Duffy, Richard Stengel, Mark Halperin and Nancy Gibbs of TIME.  The panel will be moderated by David Gregory of NBC’s Meet the Press. In addition to an in-depth look at democracy on the local level, the panel will also discuss the upcoming election and the role it will play in shaping our nation’s future.

“Chicago Ideas Week is about turning ideas into action, which we achieve by bringing globally recognized thinkers and doers to Chicago, and creating a platform ripe for inspiration and provocation, “ said founder and chairman Brad Keywell. “Our focus is to make this great city a destination for global innovation, igniting the imagination of our diverse and highly engaged attendees.”

Last year was the inaugural year for Chicago Ideas Week.  During this year’s Chicago Ideas Week, there will be over 130 sessions throughout the city and over 28,000 attendees, up from 12,000 last year. The Democracy: State of Our Union event will take place Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre on West Randolph Street.  The talk will also be streamed live at: www.chicagoideas.com.
