Mayor Brandon Johnson Appoints Angela J. Green Commissioner of The Chicago Department of Family & Support Services

Green brings more than 25 years of executive experience spanning nonprofit, state, and federal systems, most recently serving as Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families.

CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson today announced the appointment of Angela J. Green to serve as Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Family & Support Serves (DFSS). Green is a nationally respected human services administrator with over 25 years of executive experience spanning nonprofit, state, and federal systems. She most recently served as Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families (ACF) where she oversaw federal human services operations across six Midwestern states and 35 Tribal Nations. 

“With in-depth experience working at every level of government, Angela brings unparalleled knowledge and expertise to this vital role,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Her career-long commitment to forging equitable, whole family solutions which drive lasting impact for vulnerable populations makes Angela perfectly suited to lead DFSS forward and meet the needs of working families in Chicago. From addressing the needs of our unhoused residents to supporting our seniors and our youth employment initiatives, DFSS plays a critical role in our city and Angela is the leader we need in this moment to continue the progress we’ve made.”

In her capacity at ACF, Green implemented transformative, data-informed solutions that improved human service delivery systems. Signature initiatives include ACF’s Annual Midwest Economic Mobility Summit, a ten-state collaboration recognized as an incubator for state innovation in economic mobility for vulnerable populations, Housing Solutions for Human Trafficking Survivors, and multi-agency collaboratives focused on whole-family well-being, early care workforce stabilization, and homelessness prevention. 

Green previously served as Deputy Director of Practice Support for the Indiana Department of Child Services, where she spearheaded modernization of the state’s child welfare infrastructure and significantly improved usability of the case management system for frontline staff. Prior to that she served as Vice President of the Children’s Bureau, Inc., where she developed Indiana’s first community-based child abuse prevention initiative. 

Angela holds a Master of Social Work from Indiana University and is a Senior Executive Fellow with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
