CHICAGO – Fueled by a surge in summer travel, O’Hare International Airport welcomed more than 8 million passengers in June 2025—the highest June total in its 70-year history and the second-busiest month ever, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) announced today.

“O’Hare’s tremendous growth in passengers and operations this summer underscores Chicago’s historic role as a critical travel hub,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “As we welcome millions of travelers to our city, we proudly position Chicago not just as the world-class destination it is, but as a world-class gateway to destinations across the globe.”

“The record-breaking passenger volumes we’re seeing at O’Hare are a clear sign that travel to and from Chicago is not just back—it’s booming,” said CDA Commissioner Michael J. McMurray. “The CDA is proud to build on the strong partnerships with our hub carriers and other airline partners that are making this summer the busiest in the history of Chicago’s airports.”

According to newly posted data from the CDA, O’Hare saw 8.04 million passengers in June 2025—up 8.72% from June 2024 and just shy of the all-time monthly record set in July 2019.

In the first half of 2025, more than 40.1 million travelers passed through O’Hare, a 6% increase over the same period last year. June alone recorded more than 77,000 takeoffs and landings—a 13.45% jump from June 2024. For the year to date, flight operations total more than 407,000, up 10.4% year over year.

Additionally, O’Hare’s TSA checkpoints have repeatedly shattered daily screening records since June. Of the 10 busiest days ever at TSA checkpoints, nine have occurred since June 19, capped by a new all-time high on Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, when 117,871 passengers were screened.

This summer is shaping up to be the busiest Chicago’s airports have ever been with airlines scheduling nearly 17.8 million departing seats from O’Hare and Midway between June and August, a 7% increase over last year and a 4% increase over 2019, O’Hare’s busiest year in history. O’Hare and Midway will serve a combined 265 destinations worldwide, up from 250 last summer.
