Winter weather conditions expected for weekend; Possible Icy,wet roads make traveling hazardous

January 10, 2020

Flood Watch in effect, Lakeshore Flood Warning and Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Saturday

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), is urging motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution this weekend as potential impacts from wind, rain, sleet, snow and lakeshore flooding may cause slippery conditions in Chicago.

The National Weather Service has issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning in effect early Saturday morning until Sunday morning. Lakeshore flooding should be expected. The winds and high waves combined with record high lake levels could impact shoreline erosion. OEMC reminds the public to adhere to lakefront path closures, even if conditions look passable and safe. Some lakefront paths are already closed.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Saturday morning through early Sunday morning, with rain likely changing to freezing rain and sleet and a period of snow is expected to develop Saturday evening, with accumulation possible.

Motorists should allow extra time travelling and be cognizant of icy conditions.

The OEMC's Operation Center will monitor conditions accordingly.
