Building Code Modernization Phase 2

On April 10, 2019, the city council adopted major revisions to the City of Chicago's construction requirements - the first comprehensive revision in 70 years. The ordinance incorporates portions of the 2018 International Building Code, International Existing Building Code, International Fire Code, and International Energy Conservation Code. These new requirements will phase in over the next 14 months. The updated energy code will take effect June 1, 2019. The most significant changes will become optional December 1, 2019, and mandatory for permit applications started on or after August 1, 2020.
The Department of Buildings created a code modernization booklet that highlights the key changes in the ordinance and will providing additional informational resources over the months ahead.
