On March 13, 2019, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Department of Buildings introduced to City Council a major update to the Chicago Building Code to better align the City’s construction requirements with up-to-date model codes and national standards.
The Department of Buildings created a code modernization booklet that highlights the key changes in the ordinance.
The ordinance introduced to City Council is available on the City Clerk's website.
The proposed substitute ordinance, to be considered by the City Council Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards at 10:00 a.m. on April 9, 2019, is available here.
