Scam Alert from the Department of Buildings

The media has reported a recent instance of an individual impersonating a City inspector and claiming to inspect for a gas leak while requesting payment for the purported inspection.
Please note that all Department of Buildings (DOB) inspectors are required to wear clothing that identifies themselves as DOB employees. They are also required to carry and display a City-issued identification card bearing their name and photo. DOB inspectors will not be offended if you ask to see their City-issued photo identification card. DOB inspectors do not collect money for any inspection. It's also important to note that DOB employees do not make contractor referrals.
If a person claims to be a DOB inspector and refuses to display a City-issued photo identification card or asks for money for an inspection, please call 9-1-1 immediately. Please call 9-1-1 even if the person leaves as the imposter will likely attempt to scam a neighboring homeowner or business.
Please be alert and immediately report any suspicious activity to 9-1-1.
