Tent, Stage and Temporary Structure Permits

Permits are required for most temporary tents, stages, and similar structures. A streamlined permitting process is available for temporary structures (structures installed at the same location for 180 days or less).

Temporary Tent Permitting Procedures

Applications must follow the Temporary Tent Permitting Procedures.

Temporary Outdoor Stage Permitting Procedures

Applications must follow the Temporary Outdoor Stage Permitting Procedures.

  • Some small temporary outdoor stages may not require a permit.
  • Stages covering up to 600 square feet and with no elements exceeding 15 feet above the ground may obtain a permit through the Easy Permit Program.
  • Stages covering more than 600 square feet or with elements exceeding 15 feet above the ground must use the Standard Plan Review Process or Self-Certification Permit Program, if eligible.

Other Temporary Structures

Other temporary structures may refer to the procedure for tent permitting and Section 14A-4-405 of the Chicago Construction Codes Administrative Provisions. Applicants and designers should also refer to the provisions on temporary structures in Section 14B-31-3103 of the Chicago Building Code.
