Fire Extinguisher Exam Letter April 30th, 2024

In order to obtain a Fire Extinguisher Serviceman [FES] license you are required to take the fire extinguisher serviceman exam. 

You must pass the FES exam with a minimum 70% score to obtain the FES license.  FES exams occur twice a year and examination class size is limited. 

Payments are no longer accepted at the exam site and/or the COC Fire Prevention Bureau Headquarters.

 

All applicants must pre-register for the exam by calling 312-744-4762 to reserve a seat confirming your attendance to the scheduled examination and are required to complete payment for the exam prior to the date of exam.

Payments can be made at any of the City of Chicago payment centers. Applicants are required to submit (2) copies of the new FES POINT OF SALE INVOICE and a $30 payment to the City of Chicago payment center.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER SERVICEMAN LICENSE PROCEDURES  

IMPORTANT: Applicants reporting to the exam site on the date of the exam without the below-listed items completed will not be permitted entry into the examination site.

• Proof of payment.
  • Applicants are required to submit the original receipt of payment provided [to you] at the City of Chicago payment centers accompanied with the completed FES POINT OF SALE INVOICE.

• PHOTO ID (Driver’s License or State ID) to show proof of age
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age to take the test.  
• Two (2) pencils.

In order to better prepare for the exam, applicants should review the City of Chicago Municipal Code Sections on Fire Extinguisher Serviceman  15-4-430 thru 15-4-510,  15-16-670 thru 15-16-700  & Title14B: 14B-9-906 thru 14B-9-906.10  which can be viewed online at  City of Chicago Law Department  and NFPA 10 (2018 edition).  

Please ensure that all current Fire Extinguisher Serviceman in your company have a current Fire Extinguisher Serviceman license and current Certificate of Insurance.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER SERVICEMAN LICENSE RENEWAL PROCEDURES  

 Payments are no longer accepted at the exam site and/or the COC Fire Prevention Bureau Headquarters.

All Fire Extinguisher Serviceman license(s) expires on December 31^st of the current year. You have to renew your Fire Extinguisher Serviceman license by the 30^th of the next year. Please follow the procedures below to renew your Fire Extinguisher Serviceman license:

1. Each License renewal is $50.
2. Download (2) copies of the Point of Sale (POS) invoice renewal form with your completed name and address.
3. Renewals have to take their (2) copies of the Point of Sale (POS) invoice renewal form and $50 payment to a City of Chicago payment center. To locate a City of Chicago payment center go to: COC REVENUE PAYMENT LOCATIONS.
4. Contact the Bureau of Fire Prevention at (312) 744-4762 to make an appointment to retrieve your renewed license(s).
5. Mailed-in photos will no longer be accepted. Photos will be taken in the Fire Prevention Bureau office located at 444 N. Dearborn St., Chicago, IL. 60654
6. Please arrive at the appropriate time for your scheduled appointment.
7. Present the expired fire extinguisher serviceman license and a valid payment receipt attached to the Point of Sale (POS) invoice.

Please be sure that we have a current Certificate of Liability on file for your organization.
