New Building Code Interpretations

On November 9, 2018, the Department of Buildings adopted three new formal written interpretations of the Chicago Building Code, addressing:

  • Prior Code Interpretations and Memos (A10-2018-001) addresses the continuing effect of specific code clarifications, interpretations and memos issued by the Department prior to 2018. The pre-2018 documents referred to in this interpretation can be found at: http://www.chicago.gov/content/city/en/depts/bldgs/supp_info/oldinterpretations.html.
  • 2018 Update to Illinois Accessibility Code (B11-2018-001) addresses how the department will implement 2018 changes to the Illinois Accessibility Code in plan review and inspections.
  • Noncombustible Exterior Walls (B14-2018-001) addresses the limited use of combustible materials in the exterior walls of buildings of Type I, II and III construction and specifically addresses the use of Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), Metal Composite Materials (MCM) and High-Pressure Laminates (HPL)
