Exemplary work in promoting and preserving Chicago’s architectural history took center stage today as the Commission on Chicago Landmarks honored 12 property owners and the creators of two media projects during its 13th annual Preservation Excellence Awards ceremony.

“The Landmarks Commission commends the private investments made by each of the winners,” Department of Housing and Economic Development Commissioner Andrew Mooney said.  “Each one demonstrates a remarkable commitment to Chicago's architectural and historic legacy."

The event took place at the Sidney R. Yates Galley at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.

Representing a diverse cross-section of rehabilitation projects, this year’s winners include rescued abandoned buildings, residential restorations, and refurbished office buildings. Each property is either a designated landmark or located within a designated landmark district. Two additional awards were provided to the creators of a book and exhibit that involve Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. The winners were chosen by the Landmark Commission’s Permit Review Committee.

For more information about the individual recipients, see the attachments below.

The nine-member Commission on Chicago Landmarks recommends buildings and districts for landmark protection and approval by the City Council.  Staffed by the Department of Housing and Economic Development, it also works with homeowners, businesses, organizations and developers to promote the preservation and maintenance of historic properties.
