Demolition (Wrecking) Permits
A demolition (wrecking) permit is required for the demolition of an entire building or structure or the demolition of a portion of a building or structure so as to permanently reduce the building area. Demolition work that is incidental to construction or rehabiliation work is covered on the building permit and does not require a separate demolition permit.
Wrecking permits may only be obtained by a city-licensed general contractor with a wrecking bond on file with the City of Chicago.
Wrecking permits are issued by the Department of Buildings.
Additional demolition-related requirements regarding lead and asbestos abatement are enforced by the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH).
