In response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Chicago has joined the State of Illinois in issuing a Stay at Home order effective Saturday, March 21st at 5pm CT. In addition, City of Chicago facilities are closed to the public. Staff are prioritizing essential services to protect the health and safety of our residents and employees. A demolition (wrecking) permit is required for the wrecking or tearing down of any building or other structure.
Wrecking permits may only be obtained by a person or company with a wrecking bond on file with the City of Chicago.
Wrecking permits are issued by the Department of Buildings. Additional demolition-related requirements regarding lead and asbestos abatement are enforced by the Department of Public Health.
