Good Health is the Best Father's Day Gift
Father's Day weekend is a perfect time to discuss the importance of good health for dads, granddads, uncles, and all men, as June is also Men's Health Month.
Whether you're a father yourself or love someone who is, now is the time to check in on men's health. Taking a proactive approach can make a huge difference. The U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion has some tips for how men can take charge of their health. We have some suggestions, as well.
Step #1: See Your Doctor
Scheduling regular checkups with a primary care provider is one of the most effective ways to stay on top of your health. These visits allow for early detection of health risks, personalized advice, and timely screenings based on age, lifestyle, and family history.
If you're worried about cost or not sure where to go, Chicago's network of Community Health Centers offers comprehensive, affordable care for all, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. These clinics serve all individuals, including LGBTQ+ people, people experiencing homelessness, and undocumented individuals and families.
Mental Health Matters Too
Mental health is just as important as physical health, and so many men suffer in silence. If you're feeling persistently down, anxious, or disconnected—or if the father figure in your life seems withdrawn—know that support is out there. Talking to a provider, counselor, or even a friend is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Community Health Centers also offer behavioral health services, making it easier to get help in a trusted, accessible environment.
Take Action This Father's Day:
- Book a checkup with a primary care provider. Stumped for what to get dad or grandad this Father's Day? Why not a card that says “Good for one ride to your doctor's office”?
- Talk with your doctor about a prostate cancer screening, especially if you're in a higher-risk group.
- Prioritize mental health: check in on yourself and others and reach out for support when needed.
Make this Father's Day extra special, and commit to lasting health and wellness!
